Lifetime tax paid

Tax is paid in slices you barely notice. Added up across a whole career, the total is a number worth seeing, here it is.

Each paycheck's tax feels small, and that's the point, it's withheld before you see it. Summed across a 40-plus-year career, federal income tax, state income tax and FICA add up to one of the largest expenses of your life. This projects that lifetime total from your income and career span, using the same verified 2026 rates as the rest of the site.

Worked example

A $75,000 earner in California, age 22 to 65, 3% raises, contributing 6% to a 401(k):

LineOver the career
Total career income$3,765,958
Federal income tax$423,419
California income tax$174,518
Your FICA$288,096
Total you personally pay$886,033
Effective lifetime rate23.5%

That's $886,033 in tax over a career, 23.5% of lifetime income, before counting the $288,096 of employer FICA the government also collects on your labor. The same career in Texas, with no state income tax, pays $174,518 less, that's the lifetime value of the state line.

Questions

Does this include employer FICA?

It shows both: what you personally pay from your paychecks, and the total the government collects including your employer's matching FICA. Employer FICA is a tax on your labor you never see on a pay stub, but it's part of the cost of employing you.

Does it include sales, property or gas tax?

No, only taxes on labor income: federal, state and FICA. Add consumption and property taxes and the true lifetime total would be materially higher.

How do I lower the number?

Three big levers: pre-tax contributions (401(k), HSA, traditional IRA) that cut taxable income now; living in a no-income-tax state, which zeroes the state line; and, for the self-employed, entity choices like an S-corp election. The calculator lets you test the first two directly.
