Side income tax threshold

"How much can I earn before I pay tax?" has a misunderstood answer. There's no tax-free amount on profit. But there are two thresholds people confuse with one. Here's the real picture.

Search results collapse three different rules into one wrong sentence. Profit is income-taxable from the first dollar. The $400 figure is the self-employment-tax threshold, not a tax-free allowance. And the 1099-K threshold only decides whether the platform sends a form, never whether you owe. Pick your platform and numbers and the tool separates all three.

The three layers, kept apart

Income taxOwed on profit from $1, no tax-free floor
Self-employment taxApplies once net earnings hit $400
1099-K reportingFederal: over 20,000 AND 200+ transactions, a form, not a tax

The hobby-vs-business question sits underneath all three and changes how you report, see the hobby vs business explainer.

Each platform reports differently, some don't use a 1099-K at all:

Questions

How much can I earn on a platform before paying taxes?

There's no tax-free amount on profit income tax applies from the first dollar you make. What people are half-remembering is the $400 self-employment-tax threshold and the 1099-K reporting threshold, and neither is a tax-free allowance.

Is the $400 rule a tax-free limit?

No. $400 is the point at which you must file self-employment tax on your net earnings. It is not an income-tax exemption, profit below it is still income-taxable; it just doesn't add SE tax.

If I don't get a 1099-K, do I still owe tax?

Yes. A 1099-K is a reporting form the platform sends when you cross the threshold (federally, over $20,000 and more than 200 transactions). Not getting one doesn't make the income tax-free, you report profit either way.

What's the 2026 federal 1099-K threshold?

Over $20,000 in payments AND more than 200 transactions. OBBBA (signed July 2025) repealed the $600 rule and restored this threshold for 2025 and forward. Some states set lower thresholds, confirm with yours.
